Portraits of Shoes, Stories of Feet
3/F Cone Room, Bridgeway Gallery and Foyer
Until June 20

"To see this arbritrary sampling from the history of footwear, one cannot fail to notice the fine line between shoe collecting and fetishism, fashion and function and, indeed, pleasure and pain."
— Philippine Star

Can’t get enough of shoes? Treat yourself to a fashionable exhibit that is more than just about footwear. Portraits of Shoes, Stories of Feet is a panoramic view of the shoe. Curated by Yves Sabourin, the exhibit showcases 62 pairs of shoes spanning four centuries from the collections of the International Shoe Museum in Romans and renowned French fashion houses.

The shoe—both functional and symbolic—has fantastic links in culture and history. Portraits of Shoes presents a variety of styles, from historical pieces to ethnic footwear from around the world to sensual works by France’s leading shoemakers. Side by side are exceptional drawings, photographs, videos, and installations all inspired by shoes. Exhibit runs until June 20.

Portrait of Shoes, Stories of Feet is an international traveling exhibit presented in Manila in collaboration with Alliance Française de Manille and the French Embassy.

Stepping in Pinoy Style
4/F Alcove and Upper Wing galleries
Until June 20

Not to be missed is Stepping in Pinoy Style, a Filipino component of Portraits of Shoes, Stories of Feet highlighting the story, history, and trends of Filipino footwear. The exhibit explores the traditional bakya, beaded corchos, and humble tsinelas, each with stories on how they have become very much part of our culture.

In contrast are creations by shoe designers such as Lila Almario, Cesar Gaupo, Emi Jorge, and Brian Tenorio showcasing local shoe design and shoemaking at its best. Stepping in Pinoy Style also features footwear once worn by prominent personalities from the collection of the Marikina Shoe Museum. Catch Stepping in Pinoy Style until June 20.

Quo Vadis, Lakaran? Installation by Kidlat Tahimik
4/F Upper Wing Gallery
Until June 20

A unique addition to Portraits of Shoes is a special installation of carved wooden shoes by filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik. Entitled Quo Vadis, Lakaran?, the installation is a Filipino response to an earlier work in Baguio by Hans Angerer, a German artist whom Kidlat had collaborated with for an artist-in-residence program by the Goethe Institut.

To make the 180 pairs of shoes needed for the installations, Angerer and Kidlat commissioned 42 Ifugao woodcarvers. The carvers, used to producing tourist souvenirs, took a break from their routine and created their own artistic designs. Quo Vadis, Lakaran? also incorporates bulol carvings by Lopes Nauyac and Santos Bayucca.

If The Shoe Fits by Pete Jimenez

In If The Shoe Fits, sculptor Pete Jimenez shows us that his favorite weapon of choice—scrap iron—can be combined with wooden shoe lasts and have second lives as interesting art pieces. Presented in conjunction with Portraits of Shoes, Stories of Feet, the solo exhibit is Jimenez’s own witty and creative take on shoes, composed of 20 artworks of varying sizes.
