FROM OUR BOOKS & GIFTS CORNER:
PHILIPPINE ETHNIC PATTERNS: A DESIGN SOURCEBOOK
|
|
By the Product Development and Design Center of the Philippines
22 x 28 cm, 355 pages, Black and white with some full color images, Softbound
P1,500
Style guides and pattern books are not new.
They were widely published and used in 19th century Europe and America as guides to craftspeople, homebuilders, and architects.
Philippine Ethnic Patterns follows this long tradition, helping designers in today's creative industries.
It is the only sourcebook of design motifs culled from Philippine traditional arts and crafts.
The design sourcebook reduces local motifs into simple images, serving as inspiration for products and projects.
From Neal Oshima's photographs of the National Museum ethnographic collections, abstracts were traced to show patterns that can be readily used.
With the help of social scientist Dr. Jesus Peralta, the patterns are clustered according to material, process, and origin.
Philippine Ethnic Patterns is available at our Books & Gifts Corner in line with our major theme, Design as Art, Art as Design.
Visit our shop at the museum lobby or call us at 889-1234 for more titles.

IN FOCUS:
AMORSOLO'S SPANISH CONQUISTADOR
|
Spanish Conquistador, Fernando Amorsolo (1892 - 1972, National Artist for Visual Arts), 1928, Oil on canvas, 30.5 x 38.1 cm.
Although renowned for his brilliantly lit landscapes and smiling maidens, Fernando Amorsolo was also famous for his historical paintings.
This portrait of a Spanish conquistador is among those inspired by figures and events in Philippine history.
Amorsolo was said to have undertaken painstaking research that included reading 16th century Spanish accounts of the Philippines, consulting with prominent scholars, and finding visual sources on costumes, arms, and armor that would have been worn by Ferdinand Magellan and his men.
Many of Amorsolo's works which depicted early contact between conquistadores and the Philippines were a delicate balance of history and the painter's imagination.
See other portraits by Amorsolo in the upcoming exhibit Mukhang Tsinoy. Opening in October, the show is presented by the Yuchengco Museum as part of His Art, Our Heart, an eight-museum four-month Amorsolo retrospective.
